Who We Are 

The mission of Maryland Therapeutic Riding (MTR) is to improve the quality of life of children, adults, active military, and veterans with special needs by connecting humans and horses in a healing environment. MTR has served the special needs community since its inception in 1996. This includes individuals with physical, cognitive, social and behavioral challenges due to genetics, injury, illness or trauma.

Many of our clients have exhausted traditional therapies- MTR is their last hope. Research shows that equine-assisted services often work where traditional therapies have failed. The movement of the horse helps to improve connections in the brain and increased strength and core conditioning to improve balance and coordination enables clients to take their first steps, say their first words, and break barriers that otherwise seemed insurmountable. Horses, being naturally highly intuitive, mirror clients emotions and body language to permit them to overcome fears, rebuild their confidence and find healing in a myriad of ways.

The largest challenge facing MTR is the financial gap between what we ask our clients to pay and actual cost to us. It is a priority to us as an organization to keep our services as affordable as possible so that finances are never a barrier to anyone receiving these life-changing services. We even offer a few different scholarships for participants who qualify. Therefore, fundraising events like Bingo are vital to the success of our mission.
